Award Recipients

Martin ScorseseSpecial Achievement Award
Martin Scorsese

One of America’s most acclaimed filmmakers, Martin Scorsese is famous for making award-winning movies that reflect his Italian-American roots. Scorsese developed severe asthma at age three and recalls he couldn’t run, play sports, or touch animals. Laughter triggered asthma and asthma medications made him feel jumpy. Too ill to play outdoors, Scorsese observed the world outside his kitchen window and the local movie theater where he spent many hours. He often credits this period of his life as the catalyst for success today. His moving story of overcoming asthma to achieve his dreams is a testament to the power of the human spirit to prevail over adversity.

Sandra Fusco-WalkerFounders Award
Sandra Fusco-Walker

When AANMA first started the Outreach Service Coordinator (OSC) program 10 years ago, Sandra Fusco-Walker was one of the first to volunteer, and soon thereafter joined AANMA to direct the program. Under her leadership, the program grew to include 74 volunteer OSCs representing 34 states -- and the numbers continue to increase. Her can-do approach to helping others overcome asthma motivates and inspires both volunteers and professionals alike. Sandra is the consummate patient advocate.

Burlington, NC

The Healthy Alamance Child Asthma Coalition Alamance County, North Carolina, formed in 1999 to address the high rate of asthma in the community. The coalition has had great success improving the availability of effective asthma care, increasing awareness of asthma, and enhancing the coordination of care among local agencies and providers. Their efforts have served the community well; asthma-related hospitalization rates have been cut nearly in half, and their new Pediatric Asthma Center now serves as a permanent facility where parents of children with asthma can turn for help and support.
