Sleep-EZ Tips
- Encase pillows in zippered allergen-impermeable covers or wash every two weeks in hot water (130°F).
- Encase mattress and box springs in zippered allergen-impermeable covers.
- Wash all blankets, sheets, pillowcases, and mattress pads, if used, in hot water (130ºF) every two weeks.
- Comforters should be washed every two weeks, encased in allergen-impermeable interliners or placed within a finished allergen-barrier duvet cover.
- Use wipeable furniture (wood, plastic, vinyl, or leather) in place of upholstered furniture.
- Medical studies have determined that the box springs can contain as high or higher levels of mite allergens as the mattress alone. As a result, the box springs should also be encased along with the mattress.
- The designation "non-allergenic" or "hypo-allergenic" on bedding materials only means that the fibers themselves do not cause allergies. Don’t be fooled into thinking the products are dust-mite proof.
- Stuffed material of any type will support dust mite growth and allow accumulation of dust-mite allergens and must, therefore, be washed regularly in hot water.
- Use a nasal wash before bed time to reduce drainage and subsequent coughing. Use a topical nasal corticosteroid or other prescribed sprays after the nasal wash.
